Silent film festival to be held in US

The second edition of the Globe International Silent Film Festival (GISFF) is scheduled to be held in the United States.

Initially launched by Iranian film buffs of the Persian Students Association of Michigan State University, the first edition of the Globe International Silent Film Festival was held in Iran last year.

The festival selection committee has started reviewing submissions and the selected films will be announced in the last week of January.

The GISFF competition section will consist of four categories: fiction, documentary, animation and experimental. The best of each category as well as the best director and the best script will be awarded. The jury and the audience will also select two movies for awards.

Iran’s House of Cinema and the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology supported the first edition of the festival in Iran last May.

The GISFF is planned to be held in a new country every year, so that the silent cinema industry is introduced to all enthusiasts.

Silent films refer to films without dialogue or narration and recount their story through the language of imagery, just as a painting.

The silent era of cinema (1895-1936) had an important role in transforming the moving motion picture into a richer and powerful industry, the organizers of the festival expressed.

The Globe International Film Festival was founded in 2015 and its first year had received incredible reception on the international scale – around 2,200 films were submitted to the festival, the official website of the festival wrote.

The festival is to be held on April 3-5, 2017 in the US state of Michigan.
